Chapter 6: Principles of Interpretation
Interpretation means to give proper meaning to something. Interpretation of the Bible is very premodisl for effective understanding.
While you read, you must be able to state to whom God was speaking- the Jesws, Gentiles or the church. Unless you are able to identify the subject, you will misinterpret the bible.1 Co 10:32.
A wrong interpretation of the word equals misdirection. There are certain principles that will help you to properly understand the Bible:-
1. The rule of divine authority, that is accepting the Bible as the final truth, inspired by God.
From this we can derive two kinds of inspiration:-
* Verbal inspiration which means that God inspired every word in the Bible and plenary inspiration which concludes that the entire Bible was inspired by God and by this, there can never be any conflict about the word of God
2. The Rule of lateral interpretation. This is to belief the Bible without any sign of doubt.
3. The rule of contextual consideration which states that every verse of the Bible should be studied in the context in which it is written.
To study a verse in its context, ask to know:-
* Who is speaking?
* What is being said?
* To whom it is being said
*Why was it said?
* When was it said.
4. The rule of first mention because identifying it, gives you the key to its meaning anywhere else it occurs.
5. The rule of repetition which states that because all scripture is inspired, any repetition is for emphasis.
6 The rule of cumulative revelation which states that, the full truth of God’s word on any subject must not be gotten from an isolated passage.
